Not since 1954 has a side managed eight goals in a World Cup finals but Germany could easily have had more against an embarrassingly bad Saudi Arabian team.

The Saudis may now sack coach Nasser Al –Johar but most of his team should also be dumped as they looked like men against boys against Germany.

The Germans have hit more than 30 goals in friendlies running into these finals and they hit 8 more with Carsten Jancker having a perfectly good strike ruled out in the 6th minute for a foul that never was.

Miroslav Klos helped himself to three goals but the star performer was midfielder Bernd Schneider whose busy prompting will test sides better than the Saudis at these finals.

From the opening seconds it was clear that coach Rudi Voller’s tactics for the Germans were simple and very effective.

Crosses played in high for Carsten Jancker who destroy the Saudi defence and so it proved with the Bayern Munich player having several sighters to soften up the Saudi rear and expose goalkeeper Al-Deayea who was not at fault for any of the goals and made two good saves in the second half to defy Michael Ballack.

The goal rush started with Klose heading in a cross on the bounce on 19 minutes with Ballack creating space for another chipped ball into the front of goal six minutes later for the striker to finish with his head. Five minutes before half time Ballack was unmarked to head in an angled cross from the right by Christian Ziege and Ballack crossed for Klose to back-heel Jancker into the goal mouth for a finish as he went to ground in the 46th minute.

The demolition continued after the break.

Schneider set up Klose for his hat-trick in the 69th minute with a great cross from the right and Linke headed in a Schneider corner two minutes later for the sixth goal.

Substitute Oliver Bierhoff went to ground as the ball ran past him 35 metres from goal in the 84th minute to hit an unusual finish first time wide of Al-Deayea and Schneider curled in a free-kick from the ‘D’ in the 92nd minute as Germany showed they may be running into form at just the right time.

However, Klose, Ballack and Schneider will face many more difficult opponents than the Saudis if they are to progress this month but they have already joined the record books for these finals by hitting 8 goals for the first time since Hungary defeated East Germany 8-3 in 1954.
